Jarvisness

In de Olofspoort, Amsterdam

Jarvises generally don't want a lengthy history lesson with their drink, but they're prepared to make an exception in places such as In de Olofspoort. The building that houses the bar dates back to 1619, but the area it stands on is much older. It is on the site of a former city gate, named after the Norwegian saint Olaf in honour of the Norwegian sailors who brought thousands of trees from Norway to be used as foundation supports for the city. The bar itself only dates back to 1988, but much of the charm of the centuries-old former bakery and confectionery premises was retained. The manageress grew up in the building, and still lives there. She holds regular jenever samplings and, should the mood take you, she is a licensed marriage celebrant.
