Inverary, Argyll

Amazingly the snow in Yorkshire disappeared overnight and with no more due until tomorrow, we decided to go for it today. Most beautiful drive to Scotland, sunshine all the way. Reached Inverary just before the sun went down, always a treat to see the black and white town come slowly into view.

Inverary, on the western shore of Loch Fyne, is the county town of Argyll and Bute. Inverary Castle is the seat of the Duke of Argyll, head of Clan Campbell. Back in the 1700's, the third Duke decided to rebuild the castle, and the cluster of hovels and humble cottages which then made up the town were too close to his new home for his comfort. Although he drew up plans, little was done until the 5th Duke took the project in hand and employed architects to construct an attractive town, set discreetly away from the castle. It's now known as a fine example of 18th century Scottish architecture. [Hope I've remembered this correctly after the long and tiring drive].

Better in large if you can be bothered!
