New Born Calf

For the past few weeks the field to the back of our house has been used as the maternity ward for cows about to give birth. This calf was the first to be born and was less than one hour old when I took this image. The mother was assisted by another cow who licked to clean the new born and appeared to be encouraging the young mother to help her new born. When the farmers arrived to take mother and calf away the mother was reluctant to follow. Some work required to establish a bond and for initial feeding.
An overcast day but warm and feeling increasingly humid. A quiet day of gardening and other house chores, after the online pilates class first thing this morning.
