Natural Shading

Cloudy days are great for studying plants and flowers because the light is soft and filtered - no hot spots. And the great thing about ferns and indeed hostas is the natural shading produced by leaves reflecting light at different angles. The challenge is to arrange the leaves in an interesting way so as to create an appealing pattern. This might seem deceptively simple or random, until you try to do it.

I thought at first the orange leaf to be a distraction and too much of a focal point. But on reflection, because it is small enough in the frame, I think it more a counterpoint to all the green.
