Declaration of war

Today war was declared on the ivy strangling the old ash trees in the field. Some of these trees must be at least 40 years old and have been totally neglected for at least the past 20 years. Now they are smothered in creeping ivy, which makes them look bloated and top heavy, particularly in winter after the leaves of the trees have fallen. They look so sad and nothing like the majestic ash that they should be.

So, to battle - a tried and tested pincer movement was enacted, combining pruning saw and loppers. The ivy proved to be a tough enemy, but victory was declared on two trees after 1 1/2 hours. Of course, although the battle was won, the war is far from over - there are several others to attack and plenty of roots lying in wait to creep back. It's a never ending struggle! But, in the meantime, the poor snails will have to find somewhere else to hide!

Weather update: clear blue skies yesterday with a cold north wind, dry and overcast today but milder.
