The young ones

These four juvenile swallows have been practising their flight manoeuvres and building up their fat reserves during their last few weeks before they migrate to Southern Africa, navigating purely by instinct, with just a genetic memory map to guide them.

There have been very few swallows nesting here this year. Many were brought down on their way to Europe by high winds in April. I hope these four make it to Africa and back to Wales again next year - perhaps.

Optional extra:  Kushla has taken to this antique chair which was bought for her uncle when he was about her age. Despite a problem with woodworm it's a perfect fit for her. She's ready for bed and  throws  her arms up when Mummy comes into the room. I don't think she'll be migrating anywhere for a while.

Thank you for all the lovely comments on yesterday's pictures
