Staddle stone

This staddle stone is just outside our backdoor. There are five of them in the garden but only one still has its "mushroom" top.  In the old days corn and dry stuff used to be stored in granaries above the ground to protect them from the damp and rats.  These buildings were built and then raised and placed on the stones.  Now they are used as garden ornaments - even copies are made of them but they are not as nice as the original! T found one  once in a ditch on the farm.  They are extremely heavy to move!
