Ynys-Y-Pandy Mill

Today we decided to stay more local and explore the area near the cottage.

This is Ynys-Y-Pandy Mill an overly grand three storey slate crushIng mill built on an outcrop above the lane. At first we thought it had ecclesiastical origins with rows of arched windows. However it turns out that it processed slate from the nearby Gorseddau quarry. Built in 1855 it was only used for 10 years before the business went bankrupt. Apparently the slate quality was poor and did not justify the investment.

We continued on to walk round the nearby lake. Despite a clear path indicated on the map on the ground it was a different story. I think very few people must walk it. In fact we only saw one couple walking the other way round. In places we had to search for the path through Bracken.

Very warm in the morning but then clouded over. Very glad of a cooling breeze and lots of water stops for Jet.

Loved the extra ....building by numbers?
