Lost in the Woods

I found a new location for a walk while visiting Mum this weekend ... Ashenbank Wood. As well as being an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), it also contains Bronze Age Barrow and the remains of a WWII Camp, one of 5 straggling what is now the A2 trunk road.

After the war the camp was used as emergency accommodation. There are reminisces of wooden huts with just a wood burning stove ... it must have been cold in winter.  Most of the structures were cleared in the 1950s, but apparently some bunkers still exist. This is one of the entrances disappearing into the undergrowth, so clearly a candidate for this week’s Derelict Sunday Challenge.
