Some of the butterflies that I saw todayIt is difficult to see the poor butterfly which I think might be a Ringlet resting on some sorrel and despite having hardly anything left of its wings it was able to fly quickly with little evidence of its injuries. Both a Small Heath and a Spotted Wood were enjoying the ragwort flowers which were profuse in that area with a few Cinnabar moth caterpillars.  I was pleased to see my first Wall butterfly for the year especially as it is now a UK Priority Species for conservation due to the continued loss of habitat and resulting drop in numbers especially in England although they have now spread to the coasts of south west and south east Scotland. The Wall is so named as it has a habit of basking on walls, rocks or stony places as it was doing here on the side of the footpath.
