Glad All Over

With little else to do during March and April we, like many others, spent a lot of time in the garden, clearing, cutting back and replanting.
At the start of lockdown, one of the borders in the front garden was a mix of weeds and rampaging Lily of the Valley that was also trying to take over the lawn. To be honest, we’d done nothing more than have random, half-hearted and rushed attempts to keep it under control for the previous four years, due to most of our time being spent away from home sorting out and emptying various relatives’ properties.
Once we had the border clear, it was time to fill it again - this time with flowers and shrubs we actually wanted rather than what had randomly seeded itself over the last few years. There is a Fuchsia, a rose and some others I don’t know the names of! But a very impressive sight only occurred this week when the Gladioli started flowering. I particularly liked this shot I took this evening with the sun shining through the flowers.
I think if one good thing could be said to have come out of lockdown, it is that many of us have reconnected with our gardens and taken the opportunity to refresh and tidy what is immediately outside our windows. If we couldn’t go to the countryside to see the beauty of nature, then we had to try and bring that beauty to our own backyards and gardens.
When the news on TV or social media gets a bit depressing, a great way to restore the balance is to switch all devices off and just sit and look out of the window. If nature continues to thrive, there is no reason why we shouldn’t either.
