Last hurrah?

These blossom trees are often planted as street trees along the verges around here. If they get too big they sometimes get a less than sympathetic prune.
 
This one has been very vigorously chopped back. Undeterred, it seems, it is putting on a splendid show of blossoms. But it also has fungus growing on its trunk and I fear that is not a good sign for its future health. I wonder if this is its last hurrah?
