...is finally coming to an end.  Not before time, I hear you say!  We actually started it in early-April when it became hot and dry.  After 2 or 3 weeks, the lawn looked dreadful - as if it hadn't been mowed for 2 or 3 weeks - surprise, surprise!  But after 4 or 5 weeks it started to look wonderful.  The grass looked graceful.  It was full of primroses, primula and daffodils.  Then the orchids appeared - how many years have they waited to flower?  Then all the summer wild flowers.  It's still full of harebells.  The grasses flowered and then produced a huge variety of elegant seed heads.  I think that's what attracted the pheasants and the hare.  They had some cover in the long grass and they could nibble grass seed to their hearts' content.  The recent rain has started to knock the empty grass stalks flat, there aren't many flower buds, and most spent flower heads seem to have scattered their seed already.  So it's time to mow - until next year!
