Ashura

It is Ashura here at moment. We have a long weekend.
Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed. This was the split in Islam between the two main sects - the Shia's (who believed that the Imams should be blood relatives of the Prophet) and the Sunnis (who didn't). Shia's commemorate Ashura and millions make the pilgrimage to Karbala in Iraq where Hussein and his 72 companions (plus women and children) were attacked and killed by Umar ibn Sa'ad.
The person in the painting is Abbas ibn Ali, Hussein's flag bearer for Hussain at the Battle of Karbala.
Although Sunni's don't celebrate Ashura, it is a minor religious holiday commemorating Moses's escaping from Egypt when God parted the Red Sea.
Drove through one of the villages to get this pic.
Hoping that everyone adheres to social distancing during the processions and that numbers don't spike after this weekend
