Tiny Tuesday (Tuesday 1st September 2020)

MaryElizaR's task for Tiny Tuesday this week is to find something tiny around the house, so I chanced upon this small stone or rock, which I placed on a tile and sprinkled with water to show off the texture and colour.

Four Tops - Standing In The Shadows Of Love (recorded 19 October 1966 - 6 November 1966, Hitsville Studio A and Golden World Studio B, Detroit MI)
By 1966 Berry Gordy's music empire was rapidly expanding and he was buying up record labels, acts and studios. In June he had bought a studio in Los Angeles where he could record West Coast acts such as Brenda Holloway and use top notch session players including members of the legendary Wrecking Crew, and in the same year he acquired the Detroit record label Golden World, including its recording studio on 12th Street (now known as Rosa Parks Boulevard). From then Hitsville, with its famous 'snakepit' basement remained the home of the Funk Brothers house band became Studio A, while Golden World became Studio B, where performers would add their vocals, and finish touches would be added.
This Four Tops single was the first recording to use Golden World Studio B after its purchase by Motown. The vocals were recorded there, probably including the Andantes' added female backing vocals, and the rest at Hitsville.It has one of Levi Stubbs' most impassioned baritone lead vocals (slightly speeded up at the mix stage), Eddie 'Bongo' Brown  on (unsurprisingly) bongos and a notable Arabic feel courtesy of James Jamerson's bass lines.
The song was a written-to-order follow up to the Tops' big hit Reach Out I'll Be There, recorded just before they went on a tour that took in a show at the Royal Albert Hall in London, so that they had a new single in time for Christmas. The Tops were summoned to the studio while Holland, Dozier and Holland were still writing the lyric.While the title may have been inspired by a Supremes B-side (Standing At The Crossroads Of Love) the tune was distilled from the chorus chords of their Stop! In The Name Of Love.
