‘Two Places By The Sea’

Two locations 800 miles apart, connected by the seaside and a passion for photography, begin their outdoor photography exhibition this week: ‘Two Places By The Sea’.

Why are we telling you this? Well, we’re proud to announce the partnership was formed by two members here on Blipfoto, Jon_Davey and Gunnlaug.

The two blippers developed an idea to pair their localities of Portobello, Edinburgh in Scotland and Akureyri in Iceland.

Earlier this year, Portobello’s annual artfest by the sea was cancelled along with many other events but it’s encouraging to see this collaboration taking place as part of their newly formed event, Art Walk Porty 2020 'All At Sea’ alongside the Icelandic event which is part of Akureyri’s annual town festival.

Blipper Jon Davey told us, “‘Two places by the sea’ involves two groups of photographers, one from each location, who have worked together in pairs to produce images in response to a range of themes. Members of a well-established photography group in Akureyri Iceland, ÁLFkonur, were paired up with members of a group of photographers in Portobello.

"Recognising language has been a feature of the exhibitions, with titles and background text translated into both languages for all thirty images which was almost all done by our Icelandic friends. We have one Norwegian speaker here in Portobello, so her text is in three languages.

Blipper Gunnlaug Friðriksdóttir, who was responsible for the Icelandic element, adds, “Each pair worked with a different theme - some looking at the landscape and setting of the two places while others looked at more personal aspects of life in the two coastal communities.”

Are you nearby one of the locations? You can see the work at their seaside promenades between now and the end of October but more of the work will be revealed here over time.
