In one of the forums Robart posted this great link to a Stanford course on Digital Photography. There's some useful stuff in there if you rummage around, including some challenging exercises and it was one of those that inspired this blip.

If you're still trying (as I am) to get your head around the variables that can be twiddled with in a shot, this bit is instructive.
