Gently down the stream

Names

I love place names: house names, street names, village names.  Unless thought up by insensitive housing developers who simply call things what they think will sell, local names can carry so much history.  This is part of the frontage of the Old Blue Boar, once a tavern, now a private house.  It stands on the junction of St John's Street (named after the church where medieval pilgrims prayed for a safe journey as they set off to walk to Canterbury) and Beggars Lane (for hundreds of years the edge of Winchester where - presumably - beggars entered and left the city and dossed under hedges).  Out of shot, on the righthand side of the building, is the misnamed Blue Ball Hill.  Tiny and very steep it leads down to Water Lane, so called because - you've guessed it - it floods.

I took this shot early, on my way to the market with the sun dappling the facade.  One day I'll go back with a more suitable lens and blip it all.

And now I just have to say a huge thank you for being so kind to my swan yesterday.  You are such lovely people.  It makes being a blipper an absolute privilege.

Enjoy what's left of your weekend and have a great start to the week  xx
