On Kaua'i

We flew to Honolulu then on to Lihu'e on Kaua'i, the oldest and fourth-largest of the Hawaiian islands. 'So, you want to get away from everybody', commented a guy at Honolulu airport when we told him where we were heading. When we landed, we approached a security guard at the airport to ask him about transport. 'You don't have a car?' he asked incredulously. He told us that the local bus didn't take rucksacks and we definitely needed a car. He started punching numbers into his phone, and before we could ask any more questions, we were told to go to Herz and pick up a good deal on a 4x4 from Chuck. We did indeed get a good deal and we definitely needed a car.

We arrived at Salt Pond Park at sunset. A large group of teenagers were cooking a massive barbeque, and an older man was eating in a shelter and drinking canned beer. There were a few tents around and lots of cats and chickens running wild. We set up our tent, making sure no animals had made their way inside, then walked along a beach peppered with small holes made by wee ghostly crabs.
