Willets - and a Couple of Gulls

I was very pleased today to find quite a large number of willets on the beach. At least 30 of them in two separate groups. The first year we came to Assateague after my interest in birding suddenly developed, willets were one of the shorebirds I managed to identify and were "lifers" for me. That was probably 2013. In the years since then there have been some years when I've scarcely seen a single willet. This was looking like one of those years - until today! You'll notice that they are fairly boring looking birds - until they fly. When they fly they have lovely white and dark patterns on their wings.
