Hawaiian monk seal pup

We woke up to the shouts of several wild cockerels - a rude awakening! Fred had a swim in the sea and I found coconuts in the sand. We went to the McBryde botanical gardens and marvelled at the plants. Then we set off along the south coast to stretch our legs by walking along the cliff path to Poipu beach.

As we reached the beach, we could see that there was a taped-off area. Curious, we approached slowly. Within the taped-off area, a Hawaiian monk seal pup was lying on his back. Hawaiian monk seals are one of the most endangered of seal species, and it's amazing to see one. This pup was being watched by volunteers day and night.

As well as the resting pup, there were grizzled surfers catching the waves, a windsurfer and a kite surfer. We watched them for a while then headed to a hotel in Lihu'e, where we met the Princess - a wonderful, purry, grey cat who made a nest on our bed. We had to con her with a bit of string to force her to leave.
