Paused Shielding - Day 50

Fry’s Railway Line, Somerdale

Another beautiful September day, 20 degrees though still windy, so went for a walk with my elderly neighbour C this afternoon, to show her how to get to her doctor’s surgery that has recently relocated to the Chocolate Quarter.

In the early 1920s J S Fry & Sons moved their operations out of Bristol to a 228 acre greenfield site called Somerdale Garden City. By 1924 Fry’s had constructed their own railway siding and even had their own locomotive, transporting chocolate from the factory to the main GWR line, up until about 1980. Overtime Fry’s was taken over by Cadbury’s, and then by Kraft who closed the factory in 2011. The site has since been redeveloped as the Chocolate Quarter and the railway siding has been turned into a foot and cycle path. You can see the railway in use here:

Take care, stay safe and well...

(Ongoing Internet nightmare; spent five hours unsuccessfully trying to upload this Saturday night, and a further hour this morning, so a backblip. Thank you so much for your recent kind comments, stars and hearts.)
