Mother Hen

This is our oldest chicken. She was in our second group of chicks from Tractor Supply. She and our lovely rooster, Frank, were the only survivors of a fox attack, and then a second fox took Frank. All that was left were the ducks and this barred rock hen. When we got new chicks they did not get along with her, so we put her in with the goats and ducks. Eventually, she built a nest under our front windows behind the bushes. She would go out to hang around the ducks but stayed away from the other chickens. My husband gave her some eggs from the big flock and she has been sitting on them for the past 3 weeks. Yesterday they hatched and she is so proud of her babies. She has been strutting all over the yard with them. We are going to have to move them to a coop, though, because the temperatures at night are too cold for these babies.
