Lake Districr

The plan was to meander down the coast to visit Maryport, Whitehaven etc. I saw a sign which called it “The Energy Coast”. Apart from the nuclear power station there were about a dozen wind turbines.

I thought it would be too depressing to drive round the fells when we couldn’t climb any yet. But Mr C had other ideas and he enjoyed his drive, especially the narrow so-called A road from Broughton-in-Furness via Coniston to Ambleside, Keswick and Cockermouth back to the site.

It all looked stunning in the autumn colours - I was surprised to see the bracken had died off as it’s not turned yet at home.

We used to stay in B&B in Ambleside or Keswick when we lived in Suffolk to meet friends to enjoy some good walks - the Newlands and Fairfield rounds, Striding Edge, Blencathra, Coniston Old Man and of course the English Munros. We had a wonderful walk just after the 1997 election - all those happy smiling faces we met that day. However we did not stop in Ambleside today. For a start all the car parks were full and the streets were heaving - far busier than the city, as was Keswick. Lots of walkers out enjoying the sun. I did envy them. The foot is no better and it’s 3 weeks now.
