Some good news a teeny electronic part arrived today (a TRIAC), and after almost giving up on it, that fancy steam iron base unit is now working. The part could be had for a smidgen under 50p, if you buy five of them. That's a bit less than the ~£190 to replace the whole iron. I think the owners are pleased...
