Dear Diary,

The garden is very nearly spent, with just a few small asters left blooming.  But even in this landscape of brown there is something to see if you look closely.  I've always love that Thoreau quote which invites us to not merely look around us but to look deeply; to see what may be easily overlooked.  I particularly like the color contrast here.  It seems to be a season of contrasts.
