Our Parthenon

It was like we took a quick trip to Rome this afternoon. Our neighbor organized a trip to the local Zihuatanejo landmark known as the Parthenon. This huge structure on one of the Bay's hills was constructed in the late 70's by a notoriously corrupt chief of police from Mexico City. Even though he earned a $1,000 per month, in his half dozen years as police chief he amassed personal wealth of over $12 million. It helped that his boyhood friend was president of the country during this time. The Parthenon was his "pleasure palace" vacation home where he acted like a Roman emperor (if we are to believe the stories told by our guide) - drunken debauchery and all forms of excesses. Since his arrest, the Parthenon has sat unoccupied and is being slowly reclaimed by the elements. There is, however, still enough left for one to imagine what an imposing structure it once was. I decided to show an overall shot to give an idea of the site's grandeur, but really wanted to feature a detail shot as can be seen here.
