Star Jelly?

I found a couple of these blobs close together on Kinnoull Hill.

There are lots of theories for what it is, but nothing definite. The least plausible and oldest idea is that it comes from space. Other suggestions are the remains of frog or toad eggs, or the amphibians themselves, or a fungus, or a slime mould. This location and time of year didn't seem plausible for frogspawn, and apparently testing hasn't shown DNA for a fungus. Any ideas?

In other news, I have been quietly fuming at the loss of test results by Public Health England using Excel. With my IT experience I know that Excel is an utterly inappropriate tool for production data. Its use should have been detected by any one of : the system architects, design review, load testing, operations audit. The failure goes far beyond a simple error and lights up a dysfunctional IT organisation. We really need Test and Trace to work quickly and robustly, for our lives and the economy, and this should be a national scandal.
