Imitating Matisse

I signed up for an online class with the London Drawing Group to find out more about Matisse's cut out technique. For close on an hour, the tutor had us cutting shapes out of paper imitating photos on the screen.

We were not to draw on the paper but to simply follow Matisse's method. He used a large pair of scissors and held the paper in his other hand cutting as his inclination took him. At least we had models to follow on the screen.

Matisse also had assistants. So if they were following his method, surely their cut outs would be their work and not his. Hmmm.

After the class was over, I stuck my cut outs on a conservatory door to photograph.

The blue salvia is looking splendid in the garden. See extra.
