The Fearless Three (or Four)

Following a lazy day yesterday, I was determined to take the children out and be near water today.

A very nice lady who I met through an online dating foray earlier this year (pre-lockdown) is a wild swimmer or as my friend puts it “swimmer, we’ve been swimming in lakes for hundreds of years”. Whilst we had a couple of nice dates, neither of us were feeling ‘the spark’, but have kept in touch via Instagram aka. “The other photo site” where she posts photos of her and her chums lobbing themselves into cold-looking lakes in stunning surroundings. One of these locations was Crummock Water by Buttermere near Cockermouth.

Having delivered the children of fruit and waffles for breakfast, I packed a lunch and - minus The Eldest, who was staying home to watch ‘The Shining’ with a boy who is not her boyfriend but who I think wants to be her boyfriend - we headed off.

The long-ish drive was rewarded with stunning surroundings and some much longed for peace and tranquility. It was broken only by the sounds of the children playing and throwing small apples into the water and trying to recover them.

We had our lunch and walked up the shoreline before coming to a forest type area, which did look a little spooky after the wide open spaces. The Boy was a little concerned, but The Youngest ploughed on undeterred. We walked and talked, pretending dogs were wolves and other people were zombies. Taking my cue from the likes of The Famous Five or The Secret Seven, I suggested that we needed a name for our little intrepid group. Quick as a flash The Youngest said “The Fearless Three”, which we adopted immediately (despite The Boy’s now lapsed reticence).

Later, as we devoured my cottage pie, back with The Eldest and talking about our day, The Youngest recounted our group name and said reassuringly to her older sister, “we can change it to ‘The Fearless Four’ when you’re with us. It works just as well and that’s alliteration.”

We finished our day with a snuggled up viewing of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and treats followed by a couple of chapters of The Parent Agency.

The Eldest joined me as we finished our Friday Night Dinner binge by crying with laughter once more.

This has been the best day of the week by quite a considerable margin.

HappyD.
