Hobbs's Run

Blast Furnace

There is a well appointed tourist park in Lithgow called "The Blast Furnace". It remembers the iron and steel industry which formed the basis of the town's economy during the early 1900s. Steel produced here provided the rails for the trans-continental railway which was being completed at the time and probably supplied material for the local small arms factory as well.

There is nothing left but the remnants of a few buildings and industrial installations. The story of the industry, its purpose and the reason why it all ultimately closed is too much to discuss here but if you visit the park there are lots of beautiful displays, photographs and explanatory text

What you see in the blip appears to be the ruins of the "Davey engine house" which may be seen, looking its former best, in the extra.
