The Dominies

Writing this in a spirit of mild hysteria after being in the winning team for our church's quiz night... In normal times (remember them?) we tend to hold this in a nearby hall, where we bring our own booze and sit down at tables in our teams to eat a meal before the quiz begins. But now, as we did in the spring, we have just come off a crazy zoom call, in which eight teams competed over 5 rounds, a Dingbats page and a picture round. The last time we did this the hysteria was compounded by the breakneck speed at which we had to work; this time our ecclesiastical quizmaster gave us longer in our breakout rooms, so that the scribe (me) could actually write down all the answers in the correct places.

The Dominies - named for the old Scots term for the schoolmaster - were originally a team of four, and yes, all teachers, but tonight we were joined by my pal's son and his wife, which added the much-needed younger generation with the gen on all the stuff we live in ignorance of. On the other hand, I could name the inventor of the first polio vaccine and knew what my philtrum was ...

Now, having been up since 6.40am and in the supermarket by 7.40 (having got stuck at broken traffic lights, the only set in Dunoon),  and in church singing for a recording before lunchtime, I'm in a state of near collapse. This may have something to do with the gin I drank at the halfway break in the quiz - but I need to go and see if there's any more madness from the world of politics before I go to bed.

More zooming in the morning ...
