Woolshed, Mungo National Park

Yesterday we arrived at Mungo National Park, third visit for me, first for M. After a bit of a rest following a ridiculously long drive, we went on a sunset tour of the sand dunes and pinnacle landscape structures, where the remains of Mungo woman and Mungo man were found in 1969 and 1974 respectively. They were carbon dated as being 42,000 years old.

Within Mungo NP, the woolshed, built in 1869, is a cypress pine construction from the historic Gol Gol pastoral station. On my first visit here, the guide said it was the most cyprus pine intensive structure in the world. An advantage of cyprus pine is its resistance to termites and it is sometimes referred to as the bushies timber. At the peak of the wool industry, 50,000 sheep per season were shorn here.

Following the sale of the station, Mungo National Park was established in 1969 and what a good way of protecting this historic site.
