Medlars

We have waited more than 8 years for this.

Medlars are an ancient fruit (pome - like hawthorn and quince), little known today but popular in Victorian times. This is for good reason, since the bletted fruit are prone to exploding their squidgy contents as a consequence of the slightest knock. Bletting is the process of the fruit slightly rotting, which releases sugars and flavours not evident in the otherwise strongly acidic fruit. Some fruit had self-bletted, so we were able to discover what they were supposed to taste of. They are small but quite delicious and not for export.

The bushes are rather spiky but the flowers are pretty.

The medlar was often joked about owing to its arse-like appearance [https://www.katherinemansfield.com/article/what-of-the-medlar]. It should be set for a new renaissance in a modern context.
