Sanctuary Cross, East Hagbourne

The second Cross in the triangle that marks out the area of safety around the church. This one survived the iconoclasts rather better than its sister at Coscote, it's far from unscathed though. It was pulled down at the same time as the others but later enough of the bits were still around for it to be put back together. It's still decapitated though, the restoration of the head, the cross, was a step too far for them and so it now supports a sundial.

On the western face of the cross, the side facing the church, two niches are still obvious. The larger one probably held a Saint, perhaps Saint Andrew the patron Saint of the church, the smaller is likely have been used to hold the host during communion.

In the 1970's Tom Baker's Doctor Who was tied to the cross by evil, earth invading androids....spoiler alert! He won in the end.
