A day in the life

Sandby fortress

One of todays walks brought me and my visitors to Sandby borg, 'Sandby fortress'. During the iron age, some 1500 years ago, the times were quite unsafe on Öland, having several chiefs each controlling and defending his small area of the island. They were all trading and being farmers, some trading with other countries and , sometimes fighting the other chiefs for some reason or other.

A tragic massacre took place here where a whole population, or clan, was murdered one early morning. The were all slaughtered and left on the ground, nothing was taken, they were just killed. Nobody has ever used the land for anything and through the years it was forgotten, only leaving stories that it was a haunted place so nobody went there.

These finds took place quite recently and archeological diggings has started, trying to cast some light over this tragic even.
It's hard to find a photo showing the area, if you don't have a drone, so I thought this boulder just outside the place looked grim enough to represent the event and the feelings you get when walking here.
