'Chick's'

Pictured today is 'Chick's Hotel,' Port Chalmers.
Port Chalmers today has a population of about 3,000 people but is still serviced by five pubs. Chick's is one of these but has seen better days.
Built in the 1870s at the tail end of the gold rush, Chick's is apparently the most haunted pub in Otago. A sailor died there after setting his bed on fire in 1914 and a love triangle ended tragically with a double murder and suicide in the 1970s. In those days Chick's was apparently the roughest pub in town.
Beneath the hotel manacles were found fixed to the cellar walls and mysterious tunnels led away from the hotel towards the docks. Where those tunnels ended is today unknown as the area was massively changed when the new commercial port was built (on the right of the photograph). However, rumour has it that unwary patrons who drank too much would be sold to ships captains short on crew and spirited away.
Ahhh, the good old days..
;)
