Reigate Fort

Towards the end of the 1800s Britain became increasingly worried about a threat from France to invade following investment in its naval force. So a string of 13 forts was built along the North Downs to defend London. Reigate Fort was built in 1898 as part of this scheme, and held ammunition and tools to build trenches to link the 72-mile long stretch of forts, but by 1906 was deemed not to be required.

Today the misty damp conditions never did clear, and only served to emphasize the poor conditions the soldiers would have had to endure.
