Shifting sands

The gateway to lonely St Fergus Kirkyard. The dyke was built by public subscription in 1751 and is, from the outside, the regulation 2ells (just over 6 feet) high but the quantity of burials within have caused the ground level to rise. On the outer side there is still a row of hitching hooks for tying up mourners horses. (extra) By 1616 the Kirkyard was recorded as being" Ovircassin with sand in ane wilderness o-er blawn with sand" at which point the kirk, founded by St Fergus was abandoned.
