Some of Beryl's jars

We bought our first house from Beryl and Vince, in 1986. It was the happiest house purchase I have ever encountered. There were other would-be purchasers, but Beryl and Vince wanted us to have the house. I think they hoped we would love it and look after it as they had, and indeed we did.

Beryl and Vince were dear, good people (extra). They had lived in the house for decades and raised children and grandchildren there. Beryl was a great cook and she made delicious fairy cakes and butterfly cakes. They made sure that they left everything about the house in apple pie order for us. Vince even painted the insides of the gutters for us.

When they moved out to their new home in a retirement village, Beryl and Vince left us various things they thought we might find useful, including a dozen or more of Beryl’s kitchen storage jars. These weren’t  matching designer jars like you might buy at IKEA or Barbara’s Storehouse. These were repurposed jars that originally contained instant coffee or Christmas chocolates or mixed nuts. We are still using them, and I would never throw them out. They remind us of Beryl and Vince and that happy house purchase. They also speak to us of a simpler time and a simpler economy in which things were valued for the new uses they could be put to.
