Thank You For the Days ..

Up the Hill

The storm blew through, and today promised to be fair. We decided to make a packed lunch and go for a proper walk. But then it rained a little, and I broke out the jigsaw that the Kingston Crew gave us for Christmas ... we just couldn't tear ourselves away from it and ended up eating our picnic in the kitchen.

So we did the circuit that starts and ends at our back door .... up the loan, through the kissing gate, down the burn and back along the cleugh ..... to use the local names. You won't find them on the map. Likewise when someone born in the town asks me where we live, I say 'Up the Pairshoose Brae' and they know exactly where we are, just behind the former County Workhouse.

Someone gave us a reprint of an 1840 Guide to Scotland, and the jigsaw is a map of the country in around 1600, so I'm very into the old names at the moment :-)

The view from up our hill is looking south to the Carter Bar, one of the ancient border crossings. So that's the forbidden territory ( in these Covid Times) of England. We can look, but not visit .... yet.
