Nero's Last Day

Angie's first horse, Nero, bought 1988 from a farm between Munich and Garmisch where he roamed around the yard freely.

Seemingly he had been trained and started a career as a Trotter on the racecourse but didn't make the grade. These horses were sold for next to nothing, often to somewhat dodgy dealers. Seems Angie in her desire to have a horse but having limited money, fell for the trick.

He was given a check over by her vet but within 14 days of getting Nero home, he developed chronic coughing. However, it was now outside the legal time to be able to cancel the deal. Vet said he had almost certainly been injected with a suppressant, a common trick.

Elsewhere in my journal will be more about Nero but today the pain in his 20-year-old feet was clearly no longer tolerable for him. A last graze on the field with his pals (far right) before the vet came in the evening and gave him the jabs while he grazed.

End of a very special era
