Life after Burradoo, NSW

So minor - so meaningful

One good thing has happened in 2021 - a change to the Australian national anthem which has been very largely welcomed by the community. The Governor-General has agreed to the Commonwealth Government's recommendation to make an amendment to the anthem for the first time since 1984. It seems a minor change but it is powerful. Our indigenous Australians, the oldest known civilisation on earth, have, understandably, long been offended by the second line in the national anthem - "For we are young and free". Today's change means that we will now sing "For we are one and free". This not only removes the offending word but emphasises that we are one nation, albeit one of the most multicultural countries in the world.

I'm not a huge fan of our national anthem but I fully support today's change.
