Sleep where you fall

After our first snow fall of any importance - and it was pretty pathetic, to be honest, the English wouldn't even have cancelled their trains for it - we headed out into the garden to see if diving on snow might not be more comfortable than diving on ice.

It was. It also allowed me to issue my first "I told you so" of the year. 

"If you don't put the goalpost away, it'll freeze to the spot and be stuck there for the year," I said in November, December and January. And so it proved. Age and wisdom beats youth and inexperience every time. 

"Why didn't you put it away then, if you knew?" came the answer. 

After having beaten him remorselessly for 30 minutes with a fallen branch, we settled down to playing football with a defender (i.e. the tree) in place.

The defender was better than he seemed...
