An Old Library

L3 Day 18. I went to the Post Office today and this is nearly opposite - The Old Library in Hampton Wick. See extra for the whole building. This is no longer a library and has not been for a while. This was built for the Hampton Wick Local Board in 1884 and housed the offices of the Hampton Wick Urban District Council until 1937 when this was abolished. It housed a library on the ground floor until a new one was opened nearby in the 1980’s. The building was eventually sold by Richmond Council and was converted to four flats by 2016. There is an interesting terracotta roundel in the gable exterior which depicts the stag and crown which denote Hampton Wick and is still used by the Hampton Wick Association.
