Bedside Reading (Sunday 17th January 2021)

Once upon a time I could say that every book on my shelves had been read cover to cover, but over time this has ceased to be the case as acquisition has exceeded consumption, and reading time has been diminished because of other activities (such as photography and related business), especially computer related ones.
The current lockdown restrictions urging us to stay at home has led me to prepare a pile of partially read tomes to keep handy, of which these are some.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
The Crystals - I Wonder (recorded November 1963, Gold Star Studios, Hollywood CA)
Crystals: Dolores 'La La' Brooks (ld vcl), Barbara Alston, Dee Dee Kennibrew, Frances Collins (vcl)
R.I.P. Phil Spector (26 December 1939, The Bronx NY - 16 January 16 2021, Stockton CA)
I Wonder beautifully demonstrates the Wall Of Sound for which Phil Spector was so famous, with its massive echoey sound and the thrilling vocal of La La Brooks, surely the most underestimated of his roster of singers. This is also a very neglected record. It should be as well known as River Deep Mountain High or Be My Baby, but as it was never released in America, and was coupled with the A-side Little Boy on its single release in the UK in 1964 I bet it won't be featured in any of the  features on his recent death on radio or podcasts.
Although the Crystals were being replaced by the Ronettes as his priority, this was actually recorded two months after a clearer, cleaner version by the Ronettes that appeared on their album. Clarity is not the point of this fog of noise which also adds some Spanish guitar played by Phil Spector himself.
