Anne's Daily Encounters

His nose grew longer

and finally our government fell down.

The past decade there's been mounting unease over a matter of social affairs; the young families were allowed childcare benefits from the Tax Authorities and then some were denied such suddenly and they had to refund in once the money received over years; when they didn't meet the demands, they faced a fine on top and of course more fines on top were added. And no call for help or question about 'what's going on' was answered.

A scam, a total scandal grew, what was revealed by some members of parliament, who worked hard to get the facts out and in view. They also worked hard to have a parliamentary committee of investigators sworn in for hearing ministers from the past and the present ones, over this issue plus hearing administrators from various ranks too. Just before Xmas that committee had its conclusions written out in their report.

And that report is crystal clear: it concluded that top civil servants as well as responsible ministers and state secretaries made major mistakes in the benefits affair. The duped parents, who were wrongly accused of fraud and harshly attacked, have been "done great injustice" as a result. Parliament and the judiciary cannot escape a harsh judgment either.
In May 2020, the State Secretaries of Finance had filed a complaint against the Tax Authorities for so-called gagging and "professional discrimination".
An atmosphere of political guilt and the legal retaliation of strict and unjust civil service remains around the benefits affair.

Surcharge victims say that: "With one small mistake you already got the stamp of being a fraud" But what point is there in punishing civil servants or politicians for laws and regulations that have been deliberately enacted by the parliament.

The fact that such rules have been disastrous for thousands of citizens is what must be faced now they must be compensated plus new policy must be made.
