A Quiet, Rainy Sunday

Very quiet today...and cold rain. It barely got out of the 30's today...maybe 42F/5C for a high. A quick peek out the front door at the container there....this lovely pansy in full bloom. It really lights up that sort of darker area.

Do you know that the name "Pansy" is derived from the French word "pensee"? I've heard two versions of this origin. The first is that the word pensee means "thought" and was imported into English in the mid-15th century as one of the names for Viola...as the flower was regarded as a symbol of remembrance. The other version is that "pensee" translates to the English word "pensive" (which it really doesn't) and that the little "faces" of pansies are pensive looking, hence the name. Either way, it's fun to think about the origins of common names of plants.

Hope you've all had lovely Sundays!
