The Howrahs

Walked down through Keswick, round the Howrahs and as far as Hawse End, before turning round.A shorter, flatter walk than yesterday.  In the background is Clough Head and the Dodds, where we were yesterday.

We've often wondered where the Howrah's get their name from. We passed a sign (which we've never stopped and read before) which said:

"The Howrahs"

"This area of land was owned by Edward Stevenson (1691 - 1768) A govenor of Bengal. He lived in Calcutta of which Howrah was a suburb. He returned to Keswick a wealthy man and lived out his days in the govenor's house on Lake Road renaming this area of land the Howrahs"
