Number 1 Slip

Devonport has been an important naval base since the reign of William III. This image taken today shows Number 1 Slip which was built in 1774-5 and is the only surviving 18th-century slip in a royal dockyard.  'Slips' were slipways, used for ship building or repair. Number 1 slip is located close to Mutton Cove and Mount Wise, from which there are extensive views across the Tamar to Cornwall.
